Saudi Arabia Leads International Push for Palestinian Statehood

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia is spearheading an international effort to recognize Palestinian statehood, a move that has sparked debate over whether it is motivated by humanitarian concerns or strategic foreign policy interests.

According to Deutsche Welle, Saudi Arabia’s initiative is being hailed by some as a diplomatic breakthrough with the potential to bring peace to the Middle East, while critics argue it is a strategic maneuver to improve its international image amidst ongoing human rights criticisms.

The effort culminated in the “New York Declaration,” a seven-page document endorsed by all Arab League members, the European Union, and 17 other countries. This declaration outlines a phased approach to achieving a two-state solution, calling on Hamas to disarm, release Israeli hostages, and relinquish control in Gaza. It also condemns Israeli actions in Gaza that have led to civilian casualties and a humanitarian crisis, marking a notable instance of the Arab League publicly criticizing Hamas.

Saudi Arabia, alongside France, has been instrumental in facilitating this diplomatic development. The kingdom’s significant influence in the Arab and Islamic world, and its role as the custodian of Mecca and Medina, lend substantial weight to its actions in international affairs.

The timing of Saudi Arabia’s initiative follows the October 2023 Hamas attacks and subsequent Israeli military action. Previously, Saudi Arabia had been in discussions about normalizing relations with Israel, which would have been seen as neglecting the Palestinian cause. However, Saudi Arabia’s recent efforts at the United Nations are viewed by some as a way to counteract its negative perception in the Arab and Islamic communities.

Historically, Saudi Arabia has advocated for a two-state solution. The Arab Peace Initiative, proposed by then-Crown Prince Abdullah in 2002, sought to normalize relations with Israel contingent on the establishment of a Palestinian state. This initiative has faced various setbacks, but the urgency of the current situation in Gaza and the West Bank may have prompted Saudi Arabia to reassert its position.

Saudi Arabia’s push for Palestinian statehood aligns with its broader regional objectives, including economic diversification and enhancing its geopolitical influence. By leading this diplomatic effort, Saudi Arabia aims to stabilize the region, which is essential for its economic plans, and to strengthen its position in international negotiations and alliances.

The success of the Saudi-French initiative remains uncertain. However, signs of progress are evident, as seen in recent statements from the UK and Canada expressing conditional recognition of Palestine. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan has urged more UN member states to support the “New York Declaration.”

While the initiative has garnered some international support, it faces opposition from Israel and the US. Both countries have criticized the meeting, with Israel’s UN ambassador describing the discussions as disconnected from reality. Despite these challenges, the Saudi-French diplomatic effort presents a potential pathway to resolving the longstanding conflict and fostering stability in the Middle East.
