Siaya Artisans Set Sights on Victory at Regional MSE Trade Fair in Burundi

Nairobi – A group of 40 Jua Kali artisans from Siaya County, led by the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Trade Grace Agola, are poised to compete for the top spot at an upcoming trade fair in Burundi. The delegation aims to showcase the range of wares produced in Siaya, with high hopes of clinching the first place.

According to Kenya News Agency, Agola highlighted the trade fair as a significant opportunity for the Jua Kali artisans and traders to expand their networks beyond Kenya’s borders. She noted that the fair would enable participants to forge partnerships and gain exposure to modern production techniques relevant to their industries. This exposure, Agola believes, will substantially enhance the artisans’ knowledge and expertise.

Governor James Orengo, who officially flagged off the delegation, shared his positive outlook for the event. He expressed confidence that the East African Micro and Small Enterprise Authority trade fair, scheduled from December 5 to 15, 2023, in Bujumbura, Burundi, would introduce Siaya artisans to the broader East African market, which boasts a population of over 300 million people.

The Kenya Economic Survey Report 2022 indicated that the Jua Kali sector contributes 25% to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This statistic underscores the critical role of the Jua Kali sector in Kenya’s economy, highlighting its significance in job creation and foreign exchange earnings through exports to neighboring countries.

Governor Orengo, speaking at the county headquarters, conveyed that the regional exhibition serves as a crucial stepping stone. He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to hosting an exhibition in Nairobi. This move aims to raise national interest in Siaya, thereby expanding market opportunities for locally made products and attracting further investment into the county.
