THE MINISTRY FOR EQUALITY, RESEARCH AND INNOVATION The second volume of ‘Mapping the Rainbow’ is launched, showcasing research about the diversity within the LGBTIQ community

The 2nd volume of the the research publication ‘Mapping the Rainbow’, outlining the diversity of colours in the LGBTIQ community, has been launched. This project involved 16 presentations by students at the undergraduate, post-graduate diploma and Masters level, doctoral candidates as well as academics.

Minister for Equality, Research and Innovation Owen Bonnici, who presided over this presentation, said: “This work, will continue to shed light on various aspects of the experiences of LGBTIQ people in various sectors and spheres of life. Such works are an incentive for students and academics to focus on the good and valuable work done by the highest educational institutions in our country, with academic research that helps us to continue to build on the legal and educational framework in this area.”

“This project will help us understand better what the effects of homophobia and transphobia can be, and how these can manifest in today’s world. It is essential for us to stay focused on the real challenges faced by LGBTIQ persons in our country. This will help us to be truly effective in approaching full equality,” Minister Bonnici continued.

The project involves a collaboration between the University of Malta’s Department of Gender Studies and Sexualities, the Europe Direct Information Centre, the Human Rights Directorate and the Malta LGBTIQ Rights Movement.

The publication includes 15 papers grouped under five thematic areas which cover gender identity; social care and public policy; education; religion; and the lived experience.

This work will contribute towards further knowledge that can provide insight on specific issues related to LGBTIQ persons in Malta and shed light on gaps in policy areas and service provision that may yet need to be addressed.
