THE MINISTRY FOR THE ECONOMY, EUROPEAN FUNDS AND LANDS: The government to continue strengthening gaming industry and other sectors like esports and video game development

Minister for the Economy, European Funds and Lands Silvio Schembri paid a visit to various leading gaming industry players operating in and from Malta during the well-renowned and annual international gaming expo ICE London.

Minister Schembri, who was welcomed by Gaming Malta and the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA), said that the industry in Malta is flourishing, also referring to the regulator’s recent report that the sector witnessed an increase in gaming companies operating on our islands. The MGA reported a growth of nearly 8%.

“It is vital that, as a government, we keep strengthening our efforts to ensure that Malta remains an attractive jurisdiction, which, in turn, maintains a robust ecosystem and helps boost our economy,” stated Minister Schembri. While underlining Malta’s credentials, he said that, to ease the burden of operational costs industry players face, the government will be announcing incentives for the industry in the near future.

Minister Schembri emphasised that Malta has a reputable regulator, referring to MGA, and that Malta can boast of having a strong regulatory regime with the necessary safeguards in place for both operators and consumers.

The industry employs over 11,000 workers, and talent in this sector is constantly on the rise.

“We are also working to see that investment in other sectors that have emerged due to the gaming industry, like esports and video game development, continues. The participation of Maltese gaming companies in expos of this calibre is necessary as it continues to reinforce Malta’s home of gaming excellence credentials in the global gaming industry,” concluded Minister Schembri.
