Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg hosted the 10th edition, held virtually, of the Group of Transport Ministers for the Western Mediterranean (GTMO 5+5) Conference, where prospective plans were discussed for further development in the transport sector. The discussion took place with speakers from Europe as well as Africa.
This year, Malta has chosen ‘Enhancing connectivity with GTMO African countries within the European framework’ as the theme for our presidency.
The GTMO 5+5 aims to promote cooperation in transport in the Western Mediterranean and to contribute to the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership and through CETMO, the Secretariat of the 5+5 group, is active in the EuroMed Transport Forum programme that involves all MEDA countries.
Minister Ian Borg mentioned that such discussions further strengthen Malta’s relations with foreign countries. “This year’s conference is especially important because the COVID-19 pandemic has been a hindrance for many sectors including transport and therefore through mature dialogue and thanks for conferences such as the GTMO 5 + 5, we were able to sit down and discuss future prospective plans on how the transport sector can continue to grow and develop on a holistic level on land, at sea and in the air”.
The conference discussed ideas and plans for greater connectivity and sustainability, in view of meeting EU targets, as well as ways in which infrastructure can be improved to increase security.
