THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT President George Vella visits Freeport

During a visit to the Freeport, President of Malta, George Vella noted that in the circumstances of recent months, work in the port has been “fundamental to us as an island, especially considering that 85% of the imported goods that we consume pass through the Freeport.”

In a speech during the visit, for which the President was accompanied by the Minister for the Economy and Industry Silvio Schembri, the President acknowledged the recognition that the Freeport deserves for its contribution throughout the years to the growth of the Maltese economy, job opportunities, and the prominent role it has given to Malta in the Mediterranean region.

He was pleased to note that the Corporation had joined the ‘MedPorts’ Association as a founding member and stated that this was “a very wise move because these types of partnerships help a lot in discussing best practice and training measures.”

The President also mentioned the importance of enforcing safety rules to guarantee the health of 1,500 employees.

On behalf of the people of Malta, the President thanked the Freeport workers for the crucial role they continued to play during the pandemic in keeping the wheel turning and mitigating the effects on Maltese and Gozitan families. He also expressed his appreciation for the work being done to give importance to the Birzebbuga locality in terms of the impact that the Port’s activities can have on the surrounding environment.
