THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT: The President of Malta meets the Maltese athletes who will compete in the Commonwealth Games

On the eve of the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony in Birmingham in the United Kingdom, President George Vella and Mrs Miriam Vella met with the Maltese contingent.

In his message to the athletes at the University of Birmingham, where some of the Maltese athletes are staying, President Vella wished them every success, and commended their dedication and commitment in their respective disciplines. The President thanked the athletes’ managers and trainers for their support in training and in such sporting events.

Twenty-nine athletes will represent Malta in nine sport disciplines: athletics, badminton, cycling, judo, lawn bowls, wrestling, squash, triathlon, and weightlifting. Malta competed in the Commonwealth Games for the first time in 1958.

the President and Mrs Vella are expected to attend the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, which are being held in Birmingham between 28th July and 8th August.​
