THE OFFICE OF THE SPEAKER: Bangladesh High Commissioner pays courtesy visit to Speaker Farrugia

Ashud Ahmed, High Commissioner of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, paid a courtesy visit to Speaker Anglu Farrugia.

Speaker Farrugia welcomed the new high commissioner and referred to the very close relations that exist between Malta and Bangladesh, following the establishment of diplomatic relations in December 1979. He expressed his solidarity with the two Bangladeshi workers who were injured last Tuesday and wished them a speedy recovery.

Speaker Farrugia recalled his meeting with A.K. Abdul Momen, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, when the latter visited Malta in July 2019 to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He also mentioned his participation in the CPA General Assembly, which took place in Dhaka in November 2017.

The two dignitaries discussed issues of mutual interest, such as parliamentary cooperation, particularly at the level of the parliamentary friendship groups, as well as trade between the two countries, which is relatively low.

The EU-Bangladesh relations and the COVID-19 situation also featured in the discussion.

The High Commissioner of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was accompanied by Mr Md. Khaled, Counsellor, and Mr Zakaria, Administrative Officer, High Commission of Bangladesh, Athens.
