THE OFFICE OF THE SPEAKER “Climate change is the most enduring threat to our futures” – Speaker Farrugia

Yesterday evening, Speaker Anglu Farrugia made his address to the Pre-COP26 Parliamentary Meeting, which is being held in Rome, organised jointly by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Italian Parliament.

In his opening statement, Speaker Farrugia said that “Climate change is the most enduring threat to our futures”. He elaborated on the Climate Change Act, the parent legislation on climate change enacted in Parliament last year.

He also referred to his chairing the CPA Small Branches Climate Change Workshop, held in Nairobi in collaboration with UNEP, when the CPA Small Branches Climate Change Toolkit for Parliamentarians was launched.

He concluded by saying: “We have a critical role to identify the most cost-effective measures to reduce emissions across the sectors involving energy, buildings, transport, industry, waste, agriculture and water. This multi-faceted approach championed by small states provides a fresh and renewed method of combatting climate change tailored to small states. Malta, a small state in the Mediterranean, is certainly leading by example.”
