THE OFFICE OF THE SPEAKER Greek Foreign Minister pays courtesy call on Mr Speaker

Early this afternoon, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic Nikos Dendias paid a courtesy call on Speaker Anġlu Farrugia

Speaker Farrugia welcomed Minister Dendias and his delegation and referred to the very strong bilateral relations that exist between Malta and the Hellenic Republic, which relations were established diplomatically in 1966. He mentioned the Maltese diaspora in Greece, with particular reference to the Maltese in Corfu.

Speaker Farrugia and Minister Dendias discussed the recent developments in Libya, particularly the agreement signed between the Libyan Government of National Unity and Turkey concerning hydrocarbons, which is based on the 2019 Turkey-Libya Memorandum of Understanding on delimitation of maritime jurisdiction areas in the Mediterranean. Speaker Farrugia said that Malta holds the EU position as clearly stated by the European Council in December 2019, namely that this memorandum infringes upon the sovereign rights of third states, does not comply with the Law of the Sea Convention and cannot produce any legal consequences for third states.

Speaker Anġlu Farrugia was accompanied by Mr Ray Scicluna, Clerk of the House; Mr Ancel Farrugia Migneco, PS to the Speaker; Ms Eleanor Scerri, Director, International Relations, HoR; Mr Pierre Mallia, Director, HoR, and Mr Giovanni Miceli, Adviser, International Relations, HoR.

Nikos Dendias, Foreign Minister of the Hellenic Republic, was accompanied by Ambassador, Tasia Athanasiou, Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic to Malta; Ambassador Ιoannis Tsaousis, Director of Minister’s Diplomatic Cabinet, and Mr Ioannis Ferentinos, First Counsellor, Deputy Ministry’s Spokesperson.
