Yabelo: Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh has emphasized that the newly inaugurated Yabelo Airport signifies more than just a physical infrastructure; it is a crucial step towards achieving Ethiopia’s collective aspirations. The airport project, inaugurated in the southern part of Oromia Regional State, is accompanied by a new thrice-weekly passenger service operated by Ethiopian Airlines.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Deputy PM Temesgen highlighted in a social media post that the Yabelo Airport is a symbol of hope and development for the Borena people. It addresses their long-standing demand for progress and acts as a connection between history and the future, heritage and advancement, and people and opportunity.

The Deputy Prime Minister acknowledged the Borena people’s historical role as protectors of Ethiopia’s borders and exemplars of peace, justice, and freedom through the Gada system. He praised their resilience and water management skills in overcoming severe droughts.

Temesgen pointed out that the inauguration of the airport presents the Borena Zone with opportunities to showcase its cultural heritage, expand market access, and develop new tourism routes. He emphasized that this expansion of domestic air transport strengthens national unity and aligns with the nation’s vision of accessibility and prosperity for all.

The Deputy PM affirmed that the government is prioritizing domestic air travel expansion to foster rapid national development, with Yabelo Airport being a key part of this strategy.

The airport is expected to serve as a transport hub and attract visitors to experience Borana culture, including its historical Gadaa system and natural sites like the Yabelo Bird Sanctuary and Borana Park. Temesgen also noted Ethiopian Airlines’ crucial role in connecting Ethiopia to the global community and strengthening domestic ties.

The Deputy PM reassured that the government will continue to support the airline’s growth and modernization efforts, ensuring enhanced air travel services across the country.
