The Nakuru County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture Leonard Bor today hosted the young farmers club leadership from Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology (RVST) to discuss various areas of collaboration.
Bor urged the youth to venture into Agriculture as a business and pledged to support the students to showcase innovations in the upcoming Nakuru Agricultural Society of Kenya Show (ASK) as well as support student’s agricultural projects at RVST.
The Chairperson of the club Linet Rotich, said they are 60 members drawn from students studying different agricultural courses at the institution.
Rotich said during this year’s ASK show, which is slated for the first week of July, they have planned to showcase various innovations that make farming easier and interesting for young people.
Bor assured support to the team and commended the students for being at the forefront in encouraging the youth to venture into agriculture as an employment opportunity but also in the promotion of food and nut
rition security in the county.
The CEC emphasized the need for the youth to follow the footsteps of their parents, who have used farm earnings and built attractive homes through hard work.
He noted that the average age profile of majority of the prosperous farmers in the county is 60 years and above, hence the need for the younger generation to take over.
Additionally, he said the threats of climate change to farming require innovative minds because with flooding and prolonged droughts there was an urgent need of approaching farming using research and scientific methodologies.
