Youth Self-Empowerment Amidst Unemployment

The current state of the country is a result of youth unemployment which is a critical issue amongst the youth, as the government seeks ways to curb this, a great boost for employment increase could be self-employment that many young people churn.

Rose Mugo, a self-employed youth in Nyahururu town owns a graffiti business known as ‘Rose Auto Decoration’. She is a popular young lady in the town because of her creativity and self-drive towards life, having a degree in Business and commerce.

She narrated how she graduated from the University and ended up in the graffiti industry because of years of tarmacking in search of a white-collar job. She says that she could not fold her hands and let hunger strike her as she admired her degree certificate in the house as it faded away, but instead, she took action by opening up her business and adding her skills to it.

‘I graduated from the University of Laikipia with a degree in Business and Commerce but I ended up in the graffiti industry after many years of tarmack
ing in search of a white-collar job from the government. I could not fold my hands and let hunger strike me as I watched my certificate fade away so I had to use my skills and creativity in graffiti to put food on my table.’ She said.

She added that her creativity and skills in branding, decoration, and graffiti have enabled her to work towards her dreams enjoying the challenges and turning them into strength despite unemployment by the government.

‘Despite unemployment by the government, my creativity and skills in decoration, graffiti and branding have enabled me to work towards my dreams enjoying the challenges and `turning them into strength,’ she said.

As a youth who has experienced the difficulties of unemployment, she urged her fellow youths not to depend on the government but instead work with what they have as her creativity is putting food on her table and sustaining her family.

The availability of white-collar jobs in Kenya is minimal and everyone can not secure jobs at government offices, yout
hs should embrace self-empowerment and be self-dependent.
