Study Suggests Earth’s Slowing Rotation Led to More Oxygen in Atmosphere

A new study suggests Earth’s supply of oxygen developed thanks to the planet’s gradually slowing rotation creating longer days that allowed a certain form of algae to admit more oxygen as a byproduct of its metabolic process. The study, published Monday in the scientific journal Nature Geoscience, suggests that about 2.4 billion years ago there was so little oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere, it could barely be measured, so no animal or plant life as we know it could exist. While many of the protests were peaceful, several police officers were wounded trying to keep order in Paris. In the southern

Olympic High-jump Friends Elect Double Gold Over Jump-off

TOKYO – The Italian high jumper leaped into his rival’s arms, then belly-flopped onto the hard track, rolled around a few times and screamed. Gianmarco Tamberi was just getting warmed up, too. It’s not every day you tie your good friend for gold. Tamberi and Mutaz Barshim of Qatar agreed to the tie Sunday at the Tokyo Games in a competition settled not by clearing the top height but through a subtle nod. Edge definitely to Tamberi, though, for the degree of difficulty in celebrations. That’s not even counting all the hugs and kisses he delivered — or all
