Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome on Monday issued a stern warning to young people in Kilifi County over plotting to kill their parents to inherit their land. Addressing the press during a visit to Kilifi County Lands Registry, Wahome said incidences of elderly people being killed by their children after possessing title deeds are common within the coast region. Accompanied by Kilifi County Commissioner Josephat Biwott, the CS disclosed that most of the elderly persons have abandoned their title deeds in the lands office for fear of being killed by their family especially the direct beneficiaries of their inheritance. She warned that family members who get involved in aiding the killing of elderly people will be face murder charges. ‘There are a lot of family disputes regarding title deeds. When the head of the family has acquired a title, their children begin attacking them, disputes erupt because of the title deed. It is a common problem within the coast region; the elderly are being harassed by their children because of title deeds’ she explained. The CS assured the elderly people and other Kilifi residents of their safety and encouraged them to visit the land registry to collect their title deeds which had overstayed at the lands office. The CS confirmed that about 35,000 title deeds are ready for collection but the owners have never turned up ‘I am asking those who had applied for title deeds and have forgotten to come and check. You may have left your title here for a long time and then it may get lost in our hands. It’s not easy to lose them but it is good that if you applied for a title deed, come and collect it and keep it to yourself’, she urged.
