President George Vella this afternoon received Nikos Dendias, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic, on a courtesy call at Sant’Anton Palace.
Minister Dendias thanked the President for the meeting and recalled that this was the second occasion they were meeting in as many years following his previous visit to Malta in February 2020. Reference was also made to the visit to Malta by Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou last week to participate at the Meeting of EU Non-Executive Heads of State.
During their exchanges, President Vella and Minister Dendias went through the most pressing issues on the international agenda, primary among which is Ukraine. They both shared their views on the effects that the war is having on the regional and international levels, not least through rising commodity and energy prices.
Instability in the Mediterranean featured prominently during the talks, especially the latest developments in Libya and how the prevailing instability continues to influence migratory flows on the Central Mediterranean route. The latest tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean were also discussed.
Foreign Minister Dendias observed that Malta would be bringing a strong Mediterranean voice to the United Nations Security Council as it takes up its non-Permanent Seat in January 2023.
